Livestock Farmers Will Not Take Dynamic Measures

Livestock farmers, after a meeting with the Director-General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Andreas Grigoriou, stated that they will not take dynamic action, accepting the implementation of European laws to address foot-and-mouth disease. The farmers had protested last Saturday outside the Presidential Palace, submitting a memorandum with their positions. However, after the meeting, they expressed disappointment, as none of their requests were met and they were informed that the EU insists on the total culling of animals. The farmers stated that they will comply with the instructions, but expressed their bitterness about the situation, stating that they are leaving their animals at the mercy of the authorities. Questions about compensation and loss of profits were answered with uncertainty, as the process for their payment has not yet been determined. The farmers expressed the view that the silence and inaction of their colleagues will lead to the implementation of the measures on them as well.
