Life Sentence for Shinzo Abe's Assassin

A 45-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison by a Japanese court for the murder of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in July 2022. Tetsuya Yamagami shot and fatally wounded Abe while he was giving a campaign speech in Nara. Yamagami had confessed, and the court described the crime as “despicable” and “extremely dangerous.” The motive for the shooting is believed to be linked to the Unification Church, as the perpetrator’s mother had made large donations to the organization. Abe's assassination brought to light the close ties between the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the organization, leading to a loss of trust among voters.
