Law Proposal for Digital Literacy Education in Schools

MP Fotini Tsiridou has submitted a bill to the Parliament for the mandatory teaching of Digital Literacy and Safe Behavior in Social Media in all public and private schools. This proposal aims to fill an institutional and social gap, equipping students with the necessary knowledge for the safe and responsible use of the digital world. The goal of the teaching is for students to understand what constitutes legal and illegal behavior online, to respect the privacy and rights of others, and to develop mental resilience. The proposal emphasizes a preventive and pedagogical approach, adapted to the age and maturity level of students, without restricting freedom of expression. The bill recognizes the state's responsibility to ensure that all children have access to knowledge of protection and self-protection online, regardless of their social or family background. It is considered a necessary institutional intervention to protect minors and strengthen digital democracy. Furthermore, the proposal includes the creation of a clear and implementable framework for evaluating the effectiveness of the teaching. Emphasis is placed on understanding the consequences of actions online and fostering critical thinking, so that students can participate responsibly in the digital public sphere.
