Larnaca Water Board President: Water Savings Through Citizen Cooperation

The President of the Larnaca Water Board (EOA), Angelos Chatzicharalambous, expressed confidence that water savings can be achieved through specific measures and citizen cooperation, potentially avoiding water cuts this summer. However, he stressed that the situation is critical and that there has been a delay in addressing the problem due to insufficient planning by the Water Development Department. During a meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, measures to address the drought were announced. Mr. Chatzicharalambous emphasized the need for immediate and collective action. The immediate actions being promoted include strengthening teams to detect and repair leaks, replacing supplies in problematic areas, and temporarily disconnecting water supply to parks and green spaces. Furthermore, the Larnaca EOA will collaborate with the Water Development Department to distribute nozzles to consumers, aiming to reduce water consumption. Simultaneously, awareness campaigns will be implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture to raise public awareness about water waste and foster a more responsible culture. Mr. Chatzicharalambous believes that with citizen participation, they can save 10% of water in the province of Larnaca, thus avoiding potential cuts. However, he expressed concern about the impact of the drought on the agricultural sector, which is expected to face the biggest problems. The issue was discussed at a meeting of the Water Resources Management Council of the Ministry of Agriculture with Agricultural Organizations.
