Larnaca Port - Unions: "Towards resolving workers' issues"

The implementation of the agreements between the workers at the Larnaca Port and the Cyprus Ports Authority regarding worker safety and health issues is progressing well. This was stated by representatives of the SEGDAMELIN-PEO and OMEPEGE – SEK trade unions after a meeting with the Authority's management. According to their statements, improvements have already been made to hygiene conditions, cleaning projects and improvements to weighing stations have begun, and the Safety and Health Committee has been appointed. Nadia Kyrizi, General Secretary of SEGDAMELIN-PEO, stated that the progress is positive, but continuous vigilance is required to avoid a recurrence of unpleasant situations. The Safety Committee will meet in early February, followed by a new meeting with the Authority's management on March 3rd. Charalambos Augustis, General Secretary of OMEPEGE - SEK, confirmed that many of the things agreed upon before the Christmas holidays have begun and are being implemented. He believes that the issue is moving towards resolution and that most of the problems have already been solved or improved. Both union representatives expressed hope that the safety and health issues at the port will be resolved permanently, so as not to be a source of concern in the future. The next meeting on March 3rd will be crucial to determine whether all agreements will be implemented.
