Larnaca Mayor Expresses Outrage Over Organized Crime: 'Words Are Not Enough, We Need Results'

The Mayor of Larnaca, Andreas Vyras, has expressed his outrage over the ongoing criminal activity in the area, emphasizing that the state must take substantial measures and not simply increase patrols. Referring to recent attempted murders, he stressed that organized crime cannot be tackled with superficial solutions and that citizens must feel that the state is strong and above all. Mr. Vyras expressed his disappointment with the lack of specific announcements and results from the Police and the Ministry of Justice. Furthermore, the mayor pointed out that the problem of crime is not limited to Larnaca alone, but concerns the whole of Cyprus. He expressed concern that individuals involved in serious criminal cases are released on bail, questioning the effectiveness of the judicial system. Mr. Vyras stated that the Municipality of Larnaca is closely monitoring developments and trying to create problems for criminals. On the other hand, the Police, through its spokesperson Byronas Byronos, assured that measures are being taken and arrests are being made, while large sums of money have been seized in drug cases. However, he acknowledged that the case in Larnaca is serious and includes offenses such as participation in a criminal organization, extortion, and demanding property under threats. Mr. Byronos emphasized that written testimony is necessary to bring these offenses before the court, calling on the public to cooperate with the Police and testify. He also confirmed that security measures have already been increased and that there are other measures that are not being made public for security reasons.
