Larnaca Court Orders Issuance of Israeli 'Pirate' to Russia

A Larnaca court has ordered the extradition to Russia of an Israeli citizen, 47-year-old Alex Bronzki, who is accused of piracy committed in 2009. Bronzki, formerly known as Alexei Kerchgur, is accused of involvement in the hijacking of the cargo ship Arctic Sea. His arrest in Cyprus was made based on an international warrant issued by Russia through Interpol. The Russian side accuses Bronzki of aggravated piracy, a crime punishable by up to 15 years imprisonment. His lawyer, Nir Yaslovich, announced that he will file an appeal to the Supreme Court of Cyprus. The Arctic Sea case had sparked intense speculation about the ship's cargo, which was reportedly carrying secret Russian weaponry. According to investigations, armed men had hijacked the cargo ship Arctic Sea in the Baltic Sea, beating and tying up the crew. The ship was recaptured by the Russian navy near Green Cape in August 2009 and eight suspects were arrested and sentenced to prison. The defense argues that this is a case of mistaken identity and expresses concerns about the fairness of a trial in Russia, especially after the country's withdrawal from the Council of Europe. The court ruled that the person arrested in Cyprus is the same person sought by the authorities.
