Landmark Trial in US: Allegations Against Instagram and YouTube for 'Addiction Machines'

A landmark trial has begun in the US against Meta (Instagram) and YouTube, with allegations that they designed their platforms as "addiction machines" that negatively impact the mental health of children and adolescents. The plaintiff alleges that the companies deliberately created mechanisms that cause addiction in order to increase usage time and advertising revenue. Internal documents were presented, including an email from Mark Zuckerberg requesting an increase in “time spent” by users. Meta and YouTube deny responsibility, arguing that the plaintiff's mental health problems are due to difficult family circumstances and not the design of the platforms. The trial is expected to last six weeks and will feature experts, relatives of children who have lost their lives, former executives and top company officials. At the same time, 29 state attorneys general are asking a federal court to impose strict restrictions on Meta, such as deleting accounts under the age of 13, limiting “addictive” features and time limits for minors. The case is expected to influence thousands of similar lawsuits and be a milestone for the legal responsibility of social media platforms for the mental health of young people.
