Kourion Mayor: "Object Heading Towards Cyprus Intercepted by Israel"

The Mayor of Kourion, Pantelis Georgiou, announced an extension of the evacuation measures for the village of Akrotiri until Monday, in coordination with the Ministry of Interior and the British Bases. This decision was deemed necessary due to the ongoing state of high alert in the area, with sirens sounding proactively whenever a potential threat is detected in the wider Middle East region. According to the mayor, an object heading towards Cyprus was intercepted by Israeli forces before approaching the island. Mr. Georgiou estimated that the situation would last at least four weeks, calling on citizens to adapt to the new security realities. Particular emphasis was placed on managing the fear of children due to the sounds of war, highlighting the need for psychological support for families. The mayor acknowledged that living next to a strategic base means adapting to the sirens. The cooperation with the European mechanism and the Cypriot Republic has strengthened the security of the area, according to the mayor. The extension of the evacuation decree for Akrotiri aims for full coordination with the movements of the British Bases, while the situation will be reassessed on Sunday. The mayor stressed that sirens are activated proactively with the slightest indication of a threat, in order to put the defense on alert. This means that any suspicious activity, such as the detection of drones or missiles, will immediately activate the warning system.
