Koumis: Signs of Tourism Recovery After Geopolitical Pressures

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Kostas Koumis, stated that there is a trend of recovery in tourism bookings after the slowdown caused by geopolitical pressures. Speaking at the annual General Assembly of the Pan-Cypriot Association of Hotel Managers (PASYDIXE), Mr. Koumis mentioned that after about 20 days of pressure, booking rates began to rise again. The Government, according to the Deputy Minister, moved quickly to protect the safety and image of Cyprus as a safe destination, emphasizing that the country is “thousands of kilometers away from the war.” Cyprus’s participation in the ITB tourism exhibition in Berlin was crucial to convey the message that Cyprus remains a safe destination. Mr. Koumis stated that the contacts made revealed concern, but also confidence in Cyprus, and before the Cypriot delegation left Berlin, decisions had already been made to restore all flight programs. The Government has taken measures concerning employment in the hotel sector and air connectivity, while the Deputy Ministry has intensified promotional and advertising activities. The new President of PASYDIXE, Nikolaos Aristou, set priorities for upgrading quality, investing in human resources, strengthening cooperation, and promoting sustainability and innovation. The former President, Marios Ellinas, referred to the impact of geopolitical instability and called on units to operate normally to send a message of stability.
