In 2025, Cyprus continued its efforts regarding the Cyprus issue, with two expanded conferences held in Geneva and New York. The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and the new Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhürman, expressed their readiness to work towards a new expanded meeting under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General. Maria Angela Holguin was appointed as the Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, and Johannes Hahn as the EU's Special Envoy. Simultaneously, Cyprus strengthened its international collaborations, hosting the Indian Prime Minister and the President of the UAE, and signed a strategic partnership with France. It also prepared for the Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2026. The trilateral cooperation with Greece and Egypt was significant, as was access to US defense programs. President Christodoulides submitted a package of confidence-building measures and emphasized the need to strengthen the country's security. The UNFICYP mandate was renewed until January 2026.
