Journalistic IDs: Government Ignores International Standards and 2016 Council of Europe Recommendation

The Union of Cyprus Journalists (UCJ) condemns the Ministry of Interior for its “obsession” with imposing the Press and Information Office as the sole judge of journalistic identity, characterizing the decision as a threat to press freedom. The UCJ points out that it has been issuing journalistic IDs since 1959, which are internationally recognized, and that the government is using an inactive 1989 law that ignores television, radio, and internet journalists. The UCJ calls on the Parliamentary Committee on Interior to examine the issue immediately, emphasizing that the attempt to impose “state certification” violates European standards and the self-regulation of the profession.
