Joint Call for Full EU Regulations on Foot-and-Mouth Disease Across Cyprus

Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political representatives met in Nicosia and expressed the need for enhanced cooperation between the two communities, particularly in areas of common interest such as tackling the foot-and-mouth disease epidemic and protecting the environment. In their joint statement, they emphasized the importance of fully implementing European Union regulations across the island, as well as utilizing the Bi-communal Technical Committees for more effective management of common challenges. Furthermore, the representatives referred to the increasing geopolitical tensions, especially in the Israel-US-Iran axis, expressing their concern about potential implications for Cyprus. They also commented on the presence of British Sovereign Base Areas, characterizing them as a relic of colonial history and expressing fears of the island becoming involved in conflicts in which it is not directly involved. The joint call focused on ending wars and recognizing that modern challenges, such as wildfires, diseases, and conflicts, know no borders. They emphasized that Cyprus constitutes a single ecosystem, making cooperation in all areas essential. Finally, the need to strengthen institutional cooperation was highlighted as a prerequisite for addressing crises and ensuring the well-being of all citizens of the island, regardless of origin. This meeting marks an effort for joint action against common challenges and for promoting peace and stability in Cyprus.
