Japan Records Record Tourist Visits in 2023, Despite Late-Year Drop in Chinese Tourists

Japan welcomed a record number of foreign visitors in 2023, exceeding 40 million people, despite a significant decline in Chinese tourists at the end of the year. The depreciation of the yen contributed to the increase in tourism, making Japan a more attractive destination. However, in December 2023, the number of Chinese tourists fell by 45% year-on-year to 330,000, due to deteriorating relations between Japan and China. The Chinese government urged its citizens to avoid travel to Japan due to safety concerns. Despite the decline in Chinese tourists, Japan remains a popular destination, with tourists from other countries offsetting the loss. The country aims to reach 60 million foreign tourists annually by 2030. Authorities are concerned about overtourism in popular destinations, such as Kyoto, and have taken measures to address it, such as increasing accommodation fees. Japan remains one of the most popular tourist destinations worldwide, but faces challenges in maintaining the sustainability of tourism.
