Italy Faces Surge in Extreme Weather Events and Record Temperatures in 2025

Italy experienced a significant increase in extreme weather events in 2025, recording 376 incidents, a 5.9% rise compared to 2024, making it the second-worst year in the last eleven years after the record-breaking 2023 (383 events). The most frequent types of extreme weather were floods, wind damage, and river overflows. A particularly worrying increase was observed in events linked to record temperatures (+94.1%), landslides (+42.4%), and wind damage. The regions most affected were Lombardy, Sicily, and Tuscany, while southern Italy faced severe drought, with Sardinia, Sicily, and Puglia being the hardest hit. The economic damage caused in 2025 is estimated at 11.9 billion euros, with projections for a further increase to 34.2 billion euros by 2029. Legambiente points out that Italy is not adequately prepared for the climate crisis and that adaptation measures are sporadic and uncoordinated. It emphasizes the need to implement the National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change (PNACC), which was approved at the end of 2023, and to allocate the necessary financial resources. In summary, the report highlights the worsening climate crisis in Italy, the need for immediate and coordinated action, and the significant economic consequences of a lack of preparedness. Legambiente warns that the situation will continue to deteriorate if sufficient measures are not taken.
