Italy Considers Sending Frigate to Cyprus Amid Regional Tensions

The Italian government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, held an emergency meeting regarding the security of Cyprus and developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, amid growing concerns about the escalation of the conflict with Iran. As part of this, the deployment of an Italian frigate to the area around Cyprus is being considered, with the aim of strengthening air defense and protecting commercial shipping. Two types of vessels, FREMM frigates and the Caio Duilio destroyer, are under consideration due to their advanced capabilities in detecting and countering threats, including drones. At the same time, Rome is concerned about a possible disruption of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and its impact on the global economy, considering the deployment of air defense systems to Gulf countries.
