Is the e-kalathi a Comparison Platform or a Source of Confusion? Questions Raised by Consumer Association

The Cyprus Consumer Association is raising questions about the effectiveness of the e-kalathi platform, pointing out a lack of transparency in the announcements of the Consumer Protection Service. The Association calls for the explicit naming of supermarkets in the announcements so that consumers can easily identify the cheapest option. Furthermore, the Association reports inaccuracies in the published data, stating that the number of common products is 230 and not 248, while only three of the participating supermarkets can be considered large. The Cyprus Consumer Association conducted its own price comparison, concluding that the lowest total cost is recorded at Sklavenitis (€844.74), followed by Athinainitis (€861.56) and AlphaMega (€893.91) in third place. The Association warns that the non-naming of supermarkets renders the e-kalathi ineffective, deprives consumers of critical information, and undermines transparency, emphasizing that price comparison is only meaningful when the consumer knows exactly which supermarket offers the lowest price.
