Iran: No Clemency for Those Convicted in January

Iran has announced that there will be no leniency for those convicted in connection with the January protests. The First Deputy Head of the Judiciary, Hamzeh Khalil, stated that the cases have been tried and the decisions are being implemented, without any concessions. The January protests were suppressed with great violence, considered the most severe repression in the history of the Islamic Republic. Last week, Iran executed three convicted of the murder of two police officers, which raised concerns from human rights organizations. Khalil stressed that there would be no leniency for those he described as "mercenaries, traitors, who cooperate with the enemy". The announcement comes at a time of increased military and international pressure on Iran, as well as during the war with Israel and the United States. Tehran's tough stance underscores its determination to suppress any form of opposition. The lack of leniency and the executions raise serious concerns about the human rights situation in Iran and the increasing repression of dissent.
