Iran: Kurdish Separatists Clashed with Revolutionary Guards

Armed groups of Kurdish separatists attempted to cross from Iraq into Iran, according to three sources. This raises concerns that foreign entities may be exploiting instability in Iran amid the crackdown on protests by Tehran. One of the sources, a senior Iranian official, stated that Turkish intelligence warned the Revolutionary Guards about the incursion of Kurdish fighters. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) clashed with the Kurdish fighters seeking to cause instability. According to the Iranian official, the fighters came from Iraq and Turkey, and Tehran has asked these countries to stop the transfer of fighters or weapons. A non-governmental organization estimates that at least 2,600 people have been killed in recent protests in Iran. Turkey has warned that any foreign intervention in Iran could escalate regional crises. Turkey designates Kurdish fighters in northern Iraq as terrorists and has expressed concern about the potential escalation of instability in the region.
