Investigation Ordered into Death of 72-Year-Old at Larnaca Hospital

The Minister of Health has ordered an immediate investigation into the death of a 72-year-old patient at the Larnaca General Hospital, following complaints from the family regarding "unacceptable conditions" of care. The family, in a letter to the Ministry of Health, the OKYPY (State Health Services Organization), and the OAY (Health Insurance Organization), describes appalling conditions and requests an investigation and substantial staffing of the hospital. OKYPY will submit a report of facts, while the Ministry of Health awaits the results to decide on further action. The complaint concerns the incident that occurred on the weekend of January 17-18, 2026, where the 72-year-old was admitted to the hospital and died a few hours later. The family expresses strong protests about the lack of adequate medical and nursing staff, as well as the absence of continuous patient monitoring. The spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, Dimitris Konstantinou, stated that the Minister was informed of the complaint and gave immediate instructions for an investigation. OKYPY has received the letter and is expected to submit a report on the incident. The case has caused strong reactions and highlights the problems facing the public health system in Cyprus, such as staff shortages and deficiencies in the provision of health services.
