Instagram – Youtube: To Pay $3 Million in Damages to 20-Year-Old for Addiction – Landmark Decision

A jury in Los Angeles ruled Meta and YouTube liable for the addictive design of their products, which caused harm to a 20-year-old user. The decision, the first of its kind to reach trial, came with $6 million in damages and creates a legal precedent for the responsibilities of social media companies to young people. The plaintiff, KGM, testified that she became addicted to YouTube at age six and Instagram at age nine, leading to depression, self-harm, and social isolation. Lawyers for the plaintiff argued that features such as endless scrolling and autoplay were designed to keep users on the platforms for as long as possible, reinforcing addiction. During the trial, testimony was heard from company executives, addiction experts, and whistleblowers, who presented evidence of how the platforms work. The legal strategy of the plaintiffs was reminiscent of cases against tobacco companies, where companies were accused of knowing the harmful consequences of their products but concealing the risks. Meta and YouTube disagreed with the decision and are expected to appeal. However, the verdict is considered significant as it opens the door to similar lawsuits in the future and challenges the practices of social media companies regarding the protection of minors and the avoidance of addictive behaviors.
