Inquest Begins into the Death of Shoaib Khan

The inquest into the death of Shoaib Khan, the young migrant who was shot dead by police in Potamia in January 2025, begins today. The Justice for Shoaib Khan Initiative welcomes the start of the inquest, which came after persistent pressure from the family and supporters. Shoaib Khan was killed during a police operation to immobilize vehicles, resulting in bullets penetrating the car he was in and fatally wounding him. The Initiative denounces the state for treating the killing as a result of anti-immigration policy rather than as a criminal act that should have been thoroughly investigated. The Initiative expresses concerns about the transparency of the investigation and accountability, as the cause of death was initially described as natural, while later it was revealed to be from police gunfire. Furthermore, it denounces delays and contradictions in providing evidence to the family and the legal team representing them. Despite the lack of progress in the investigation, the two drivers of the vehicles involved in the incident were arrested on charges of illegal trafficking and remain in custody. The Justice for Shoaib Khan Initiative demands truth, accountability, and justice for the death of Shoaib Khan.
