Increased Domestic Violence Reports in 2025 – Almost 4,000 Cases

The Cyprus Police recorded an increase in reports of domestic violence in 2025, according to Evi Nikolaou. Since July 2025, when the panic button was activated, 244 users have registered with the digital application, and 14 have used it to call the Police. Ms. Nikolaou expressed satisfaction with the increase in reports since 2021, considering it an indication of increased trust in the authorities. The average number of reports in previous years was around 3,000, but an increase was observed in 2025, without exceeding 4,000 reports. The Police emphasize the importance of close cooperation with the Social Welfare Services, the SPAVO (which is responsible for shelters for victims), and the House of Women in Nicosia, to provide comprehensive support to victims. The operation of the panic button has proven useful, as it has been activated by 14 people in the provinces of Nicosia, Limassol, and Larnaca, allowing for immediate police intervention. However, the response of victims to installing the application is not always positive. For this reason, the Police are conducting public awareness campaigns to ensure that those at risk are aware of the application and its availability. Evaluating applications for the installation of the panic button is essential to determine if additional support measures are needed from other services.
