Increase in Fires by 6.51%, Damages of €134.5 Million Recorded by Fire Service for 2025

The Fire Service reports a 6.51% increase in the total number of fires for 2025 compared to the previous year, with estimated financial damages of €134,576,665, primarily due to the large fire in the mountainous region of Limassol. Over 94% of fires are attributed to human factors, and the burned outdoor area increased by 116.99 hectares, reaching 133.46 hectares. In total, the Fire Service responded to 13,401 calls for assistance in 2025, including fires, special services, and false alarms. Specifically, 7,154 fires were recorded island-wide, with 3,569 affecting outdoor areas and 3,585 urban areas, showing an overall increase of 6.51%. A significant increase (8.81%) was observed in outdoor fires, with January, February, and March being the most affected months due to drought and faulty chimneys. A substantial increase of 40.95% was also recorded in April due to bonfires and the burning of useless objects during Easter celebrations. However, during the fire prevention period (July-October), a decrease in outdoor fires was observed, a result of the Fire Service's preventive campaigns, increased patrols, and stricter penalties. The main causes of outdoor fires remain burning of vegetation, deliberate burning, and cigarette butt disposal.
