Increase in Domestic Violence Reports in 2025, 14 Panic Buttons Activated

Domestic violence reports in Cyprus increased in 2025, according to the Police. Specifically, more than 3,000 incidents were recorded, although the exact number did not exceed 4,000. Since July 2025, when the panic button was activated, 244 users have registered for the digital application and 14 have used it to call the Police. The Police expressed satisfaction with the increase in reports, considering it an indication of increased trust from victims in the authorities. Effective tackling of domestic violence requires close cooperation between the Police and other services, such as the Social Welfare Services, SPAVO (which manages shelters), and the House of Women in Nicosia. This collaboration aims to provide comprehensive support to victims, covering not only their immediate safety needs but also their long-term needs for psychological and social rehabilitation. The panic button application has been mainly registered by individuals who have already filed a report. However, the Police note that there is not always a positive response from victims to install the application, highlighting the need for continued public awareness regarding its availability and benefits. The need for the panic button arose from the specific nature of domestic violence crimes, which often occur in private spaces and victims find it difficult to disclose them. The application provides an additional tool for immediate communication with the Police in case of danger, enhancing victim protection and contributing to the prevention of serious incidents.
