Impact on Potato Exports Due to the Middle East Conflict

Potato farmers in Cyprus are facing impacts from the war in the Middle East, due to increased export costs and delays. Andreas Karyos, a representative of the potato growers, stated that the increased shipping costs and delays in export threaten the entry of Cypriot potatoes into supermarket programs in Europe. According to Mr. Karyos, supermarkets in Germany, Austria, Belgium and Britain have specific programs for Cypriot potatoes, which may be interrupted if deliveries are delayed. In addition, heavy rainfall has caused problems in the uprooting of early potatoes, while strong winds and salt spray have destroyed some potato fields. Despite the difficulties, there is a market for small potatoes, however, their price is lower. Potato growers hope that the rainfall will contribute to replenishing water resources, to ensure an adequate supply of water for the second half of 2026. In summary, Cypriot potato farmers are facing multiple challenges, due to the war in the Middle East and adverse weather conditions, which threaten their production and exports.
