Impact of Foot-and-Mouth Disease on Easter Table in Cyprus

The outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease and the culling of 13,000 animals are expected to have some impact on the Easter table in Cyprus, mainly on the production of halloumi cheese. The President of the Consumers Association, Marios Drousiotis, estimates that there will be no meat shortage, but imports from Greece may increase to cover the reduced production. He also anticipates a slight increase in lamb prices due to the higher cost of imported meat. A significant problem is expected in the production of PDO halloumi, as the disease affects the animal population that provides the necessary milk. However, there are sufficient stocks of halloumi in dairy factories to meet demand. The Executive Secretary of the Pan-Cypriot Supermarkets Association, Andreas Chatzhiadamou, assures that measures will be taken to avoid significant price increases, even with meat imports. He believes that the market will operate to the benefit of the consumer. Overall, the situation is being closely monitored and the relevant authorities are ready to deal with any problems that may arise, while ensuring the adequacy of products for Easter.
