Immediate Support for Livestock Farmers Affected by Foot-and-Mouth Disease

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, is calling for immediate support and information for livestock farmers affected by foot-and-mouth disease. Following a meeting with farmers in Aradippou, Mr. Stefanou expressed their anxiety and frustration, accusing the Ministry of Agriculture and competent services of negligence. He requests immediate action to limit the spread of the disease and financial support for those affected, covering their obligations such as loans and salaries. Mr. Stefanou emphasized the need for continuous contact between farmers and the responsible parties, to provide answers to their questions and address the problems that arise. Uncertainty and lack of information, according to Mr. Stefanou, worsen the situation and cause even greater frustration. AKEL commits to continuing its efforts to resolve the problem, both through Parliament and through representations and contacts with the relevant authorities. In addition, a new meeting with farmers is scheduled for next week, to further examine the issues that arise. The situation, according to the farmers, is critical and requires immediate and effective intervention from the government. The economic consequences of the disease are significant and threaten the viability of livestock farms, as well as the income of farmers and their employees.
