Humanitarian Values as Social Capital for the Cyprus Red Cross

Published December 29, 2025, 15:24

The Secretary-General of the Cyprus Red Cross, Marios Argyrou, emphasizes the importance of humanitarian values as social capital, especially during times of crisis. He highlights that collective responsibility and institutional readiness are essential for survival and social cohesion. As an example, he refers to the devastating fires in the mountainous region of Limassol, where Red Cross volunteers provided immediate assistance and psychological support. This experience led to a reassessment and upgrade of the Organization's operational readiness, with emphasis on internal communication, team safety, and training in First Aid and Psychological Support. The Cyprus Red Cross invests in empowering people and communities, promoting mutual assistance and skills exchange through the Time Banking model. Simultaneously, the Counseling Center offers free individual and family counseling, strengthening mental resilience and social cohesion. In 2025, the Cyprus Red Cross will celebrate 75 years of service to Cyprus, reaffirming its commitment to humanitarian values and solidarity.
