Human Trafficking: Break the Silence | Stories of Exploitation Come to Life Through the Lens of Cypriot Youth

Four short films, created by Cypriot youth as part of the Erasmus+ program “Cinema for Social Change,” present stories of exploitation and human trafficking, focusing on online exploitation. The films, titled “Break the Silence,” “Destinations,” “In My Room,” and “Not as I Thought,” are based on real experiences and aim to empower young people through experiential learning and creative expression, turning knowledge into action. The initiative, implemented by Step Up Stop Slavery, uses cinema as a tool for raising awareness and preventing human trafficking and online exploitation. The organization's CEO, Katerina Stefanou, emphasized the importance of experiential learning and cinema's ability to convey stories in a way that statistics cannot. The Cyprus Police, on the occasion of Safer Internet Day, used the films to disseminate messages of safety and prevention of online exploitation through its social networks. The program strengthens cross-border cooperation and joint learning, connecting students, immigrants, and survivors. One of the films, “Not as I Thought,” is based on the true story of Ahmed, a man from Tajikistan who suffered forced labor in Latvia. The film highlights the global increase in trafficking cases for forced labor, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC, 2024) report. Ms. Stefanou emphasized that sharing nude images of children is a criminal offense with severe penalties.
