How the ELAS Investigation into Giorgos Tsangarakis Began: Anonymous Tip

The ELAS investigation into gallery owner Giorgos Tsangarakis began with an anonymous tip that evolved into a formal complaint. The complaint concerned possible forgery of works of art. The investigation revealed an old Gospel from 1750, the authenticity and origin of which are being investigated. Authorities are investigating how the objects and works of art came into the possession of the accused, while most of the works found are estimated to be forgeries. Over 200,000 euros were seized, which reinforces the authorities' interest in the overall activity of the accused. Tsangarakis faces serious charges of misappropriation of antiquities, violation of the obligation to declare monuments, and aggravated forgery, exhibition, trafficking, disposal, and possession of works of art for the purpose of deception.
