How Much Can US LNG Increase in Europe and What are the Obstacles?

Despite ambitious policy commitments, increasing US LNG flows to Europe is proving to be a more complex process than initially estimated. While 2025 saw record highs in imports, with an increase of nearly 60%, achieving the target of 200 billion cubic meters annually is considered difficult. Demand in Asia is recovering, increasing competition, while delays in the development of new liquefaction terminals in the US limit the short-term potential for export growth. An important issue is the lower filling levels of European gas storage facilities compared to last year, which boosts demand for LNG during the refill period. Benchmark prices at the Dutch TTF are expected to remain at levels that favor Europe over Asia, offering some security. In Southeastern Europe, the utilization of the so-called 'vertical corridor' for transporting US LNG to the Balkans and Ukraine is hampered by regulatory and bureaucratic obstacles, as well as a lack of harmonized rules and delays in cross-border auctions. Finally, geopolitical uncertainty, with tensions in transatlantic relations, creates additional concerns about the broader trade agreement with the US and the supply of American energy. Europe may find itself facing difficult choices between energy security and political pressures.
