Holocaust survivor Tatiana Bucci delivered a deeply moving testimony to the European Parliament, marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day. She recounted the horrors of her family's deportation to Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1944, and how she and her twin sister were spared the gas chambers. Her testimony focused on the loss of her cousin, who underwent experiments and was murdered, as well as the struggle to reunite with her parents after the war. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola emphasized the need to combat antisemitism, which she stated is spreading faster than ever, fueled by the internet. She stressed that remembering the Holocaust requires action against hatred to ensure that “Never Again” has real meaning. Bucci described how life in the camp was essentially death, and how a guard's warning saved her and her sister's lives, while her cousin was not so fortunate. After their liberation, her family reunited in Italy, but the wounds of the past remained open as Bucci recognized children lost in the Rome ghetto in photographs. Despite the atrocities she endured, Bucci expressed hope that all children in the world would have the opportunity to live a full life and grow old with dignity. The speech concluded with a minute of silence and a musical performance of Maurice Ravel's “Kaddish,” in an atmosphere of profound emotion and reflection.
