History Lesson: On Direct Democracy and Other Pre-Election Fruits

The article analyzes the dangerous trend of leaders with narcissistic traits and populist electoral agendas emerging, both internationally (Trump) and locally (Cyprus). Despite the increasing number of armed conflicts and societal problems, such leaders are elected because they promise 'change' and present themselves as 'saviors'. The author focuses on the idea of 'Direct Democracy' as a popular electoral narrative, emphasizing that the Cypriot Constitution does not provide for such a system and that any implementation of it must be within the law and with strict institutional control. It raises questions about the security, genuine citizen participation, and protection of minority rights in such a system, as well as the risk of it turning into a simple intra-party process. Finally, it refers to the historical example of Ancient Athens, where direct democracy only applied to a small percentage of the population.
