Hartsiotis: The Struggle of EOKA Remains Timeless

The Commissioner to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Marios Hartsiotis, emphasized the timeless significance of the EOKA struggle during a service at the Athens Cathedral commemorating the anniversary of the National Liberation Struggle of 1955-1959. He highlighted faith, sacrifice, and dedication to freedom as key characteristics of the struggle, as well as the symbolism of Athens as the place where the “Oath of the Twelve” was taken. Mr. Hartsiotis stated that the EOKA struggle was a pivotal moment for Hellenism, based on a common identity, language, faith, and memory. He praised the role of the Church of Cyprus as a substantial pillar of the struggle and emphasized the longstanding support of Greece for Cyprus, which remains vital for the island's liberation and reunification. The Republic of Cyprus remains committed to achieving a solution based on UN resolutions and the European acquis, aiming to restart substantial negotiations. Mr. Hartsiotis concluded by emphasizing that April 1st is a day of remembrance, honor, responsibility, and commitment to a free and reunited Cyprus.
