Halloumi Producers Concerned About Foot-and-Mouth Disease Impact

Halloumi producers are closely monitoring the development of foot-and-mouth disease cases, considering the situation very serious. Spokesperson for the Halloumi Producers Association, Michalis Koullouros, stated that the culling of 13,000 animals is affecting halloumi production, but the situation is manageable if the spread of the disease is contained. He emphasized that both goats/sheep and cattle are affected, and the loss of animals leads to a reduction in halloumi production. There are concerns about halloumi exports, as further animal deaths could lead to a milk shortage. However, he assured consumers that Cypriot products are safe for consumption, as cheesemakers have taken strict biosecurity measures from the beginning. Approximately 80% of milk production in Cyprus is intended for halloumi production.
