Halloumi Excluded from EU-Australia Agreement for Now, Future Inclusion Possible

The European Commission clarified that halloumi is not currently included in the EU-Australia trade agreement, as the Geographical Indication (GI) Halloumi was not registered at the EU level before 2021, when the initial list of protected products was drawn up. However, the agreement provides a mechanism for future expansion of protection, allowing the addition of further geographical indications after the agreement comes into force, through negotiations between the two sides. The Commission is committed to protecting the authentic production of halloumi, alongside the conclusion of trade agreements. The process for the possible inclusion of halloumi does not have a specific timeline, but remains open for the future. The EU's initial list for protection in Australia was compiled in 2019.
