Growing Trade Ties Between Greece and Turkey in Shipbuilding and Repair

Trade relations between Greece and Turkey in the shipbuilding and repair industry are showing a significant increase, with both imports and exports rising. The increase in imports of tugboats and pusher boats from Turkey to Greece is particularly impressive. Turkish shipyards are also strengthening their position in the international market, expanding their activities from shipbuilding to repairs, conversions, 'green' vessels, and ship recycling. Specifically, in 2023, Greece's imports from Turkey in this sector amounted to 38.34 million euros, while exports reached 23.86 million euros. In 2024, up to October, imports reached 44.25 million euros and exports 32.30 million euros. The surge in imports of tugboats and pusher boats is characteristic, increasing from 11.2 million euros in 2023 to 42.63 million euros in 2024. Imports of floating structures have also increased. In exports, there is an increase in marine equipment, while there is a decline in yachts. Important corporate agreements have contributed to strengthening trade ties, such as the contract between Med Marine and Igmar for the construction of a multi-purpose tug. In addition, Greece ranked 3rd in Turkey's order book for new ships in March 2023, highlighting the interconnectedness of the two markets.
