Greek Supreme Court: Prosecutor Seeks Rejection of Appeals in Mati Fire Case

The prosecutor of the Criminal Division of the Greek Supreme Court, Niki-Anastasia Mouzaki, requested the rejection of the appeals filed by the four convicted individuals in the deadly Mati fire case. The convicted individuals, including former Fire Service Chief Sotiris Terzoudis, Deputy Chief Vasilis Matthaiopoulos, General Secretary for Civil Protection Yannis Kapakis, and Konstantinos Angelopoulos, are seeking a reduction in their sentences. Relatives of the victims attended the Supreme Court and requested that the Court of Appeal's decision not be overturned, emphasizing that the defendants are responsible for their omissions that led to the loss of life. The convicted individuals argue that the Court of Appeal's decision was not adequately reasoned and that mitigating circumstances should have been recognized. However, the prosecutor disagreed, arguing that the decision was fully reasoned both in terms of guilt and the rejection of mitigating circumstances. Furthermore, the prosecutor emphasized that there was no reason to suspend the sentence or convert it to a monetary fine, as the Penal Code does not require special justification for sentences of 3-5 years.
