Greek Defense Minister Visits Andreas Papandreou Air Base in Cyprus

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias visited Andreas Papandreou Air Base in Paphos, following meetings in Nicosia with the President of the Republic of Cyprus and his Cypriot counterpart, Vasilis Palmas. Dendias spoke with the crews of the four Greek F16 fighter jets stationed in Cyprus since Monday, as well as the support personnel. He made no statements, referring to the statements made by Palmas. Palmas emphasized that the presence of Greek fighter aircraft is a practical demonstration of support for the Republic of Cyprus, during a period of increased challenges. He also underlined that Cyprus is focused on humanitarian and peacekeeping missions and does not pursue aggressive actions. Regarding reports about the possible deployment of a British ship to Cyprus, Palmas stated that the government is awaiting clarification from Britain and will comment once a final decision is made. The visit of the Greek Defense Ministers and the presence of the fighter jets in Cyprus strengthens military cooperation between Greece and Cyprus, during a period of geopolitical tensions in the region.
