Government to Propose Amendment to Social Support Agency Bill

The government is preparing an amendment to the bill concerning the Social Support Agency and its fund, an issue that has been prominent since 2024. The purpose of the amendment is to ensure transparency and address concerns regarding the control of donations and the intentions of donors. The Deputy Minister to the President, Irene Piki, informed the Parliament in writing about the upcoming submission of the bill, as she was unable to attend the relevant discussion in the parliamentary Institutions Committee. Two proposals were also submitted. AKEL proposes the abolition of the Agency and the transfer of its responsibilities to the Cyprus State Scholarships Foundation. On the other hand, DISY proposes the continuation of the Agency's operation with significant changes that will enhance transparency and accountability. The discussion about the Social Support Agency and its fund is of central importance to the government, as it seeks to ensure proper resource management and avoid any questioning regarding the use of donations. The amendment to the bill is expected to contribute to restoring public trust and the more effective operation of the Agency. The debate between AKEL and DISY regarding the future of the Agency highlights the different approaches to addressing social challenges and managing resources. The final decision will be determined by the passage of the amendment bill in Parliament.
