Government Seeking Solutions for Vasilikos Natural Gas Project Amid Delays

The government is seeking solutions to continue the natural gas project in Vasilikos, which has been suspended since July 2024. Energy Minister Michalis Damianou informed the Parliamentary Committee on Energy that the government is considering new bidding procedures, but did not provide specific timelines. The minister attributed the delays to the time-consuming public procurement processes, noting that the legal aspects often exceed the technical schedule. Regarding the floating unit 'Prometheus', Mr. Damianou stated that it will be certified once it receives a full load, however, he pointed out that there is no pier in Cyprus for its use. The unit is located in Malaysia and belongs to the Republic of Cyprus. During the session, tension arose when the President of ETYFA, Giorgos Asiekalis, refused to provide specific details on the fees of technical and legal advisors, citing confidentiality and a previous leak of information to the media. This refusal sparked reactions and a temporary suspension of the session. The Committee Chairman, Kyriakos Hadjigiannis, criticized the refusal to provide information, characterizing the behavior as a devaluation of parliament and expressing concern about parallel agendas that are sabotaging the project. DISY MP Averof Neofytou also requested detailed information on the consultants' fees.
