Government Does Not Seek Dialogue, But 'Builds a Wall'

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, accused the government of not seeking dialogue and of 'building a wall' against the party's proposals. Mr. Stefanou called on the government to listen to AKEL's proposals to address the rising cost of living, which is worsening due to international crises. AKEL proposes measures to curb and reduce energy prices, such as a permanent reduction in VAT on electricity, the abolition of double taxation on fuels and an increase in the participation of RES in the energy mix. Mr. Stefanou expressed disappointment with the government's attitude, which characterizes AKEL's proposals as populism. He stressed that the party's proposals are specific, costed and accompanied by recommendations for funding sources. He emphasized that the government has a responsibility to listen, dialogue and make decisions. The General Secretary of AKEL characterized the need for a comprehensive plan that includes alternative scenarios depending on the duration and intensity of the conflict as urgent. He warned that the continuation of the war will lead to a multiplication of needs and problems, calling on the state to be prepared to support society and the Cypriot economy. Mr. Stefanou held meetings with mayors and municipal officials in Paphos, as well as with representatives of tourism and the construction industry, discussing the effects of the crisis and the needs of local communities.
