Global Oil Supply and Trade Threatened by Houthi Blockade of the Red Sea

The involvement of the Houthis alongside Iran against the US and Israel is causing serious concerns for the global economy and energy security. The Houthis, controlling the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, have already attacked commercial ships, while Iran has restricted access to the Strait of Hormuz. This has led to oil diversions via pipelines and increased shipping routes, skyrocketing transportation costs. The situation is worsening due to the possibility of further Houthi attacks, which could lead to a complete disruption of oil flows through the Red Sea and create a shortage of available transport capacity. Despite initial concerns, the Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center of the Houthis assures that there is no reason for concern regarding tankers passing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
