Foot-and-Mouth Disease: State to Cover Up to €5000 for Disinfection Measures, Farmers Say Cost is €6500

The Association of Cattle Farmers of Athienou expresses strong dissatisfaction with the Department of Agriculture regarding the coverage of expenses for disinfection measures against foot-and-mouth disease. The Department of Agriculture states that it will cover up to €5000 per disinfection point, while the cattle farmers of Athienou have paid €6500 for each automated disinfection system at eight crossing points. The cattle farmers took on the cost of the disinfection works as the Municipality of Athienou did not have the capacity to cover the emergency need. The Department of Agriculture's letter is addressed to the Municipalities, but in the case of Athienou, the cost was covered by the livestock farmers. The cattle farmers point out that in addition to the installation cost, they also bear the cost of disinfectant drugs, which are not supplied to them by the Ministry's services. The Association is requesting coverage of the total cost paid by the cattle farmers.
