Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Situation Critical but Manageable, No New Cases

The situation regarding foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus is described as critical but manageable, according to Sotiria Georgiou, Senior Veterinary Officer. There have been no new cases reported, however, Cyprus has lost its free export regime. Vaccinations of cows in the three-kilometer area have been completed and are continuing in the ten-kilometer area, while vaccines for pigs have been ordered. A meeting was held with cattle and sheep farmers, where they were informed by European Union experts about the vaccination program and preventive measures. Authorities are urging the public to remain calm and comply with the ban on the movement of animals, feed, and people within the ten-kilometer surveillance zone. Culling of animals continues, with specifications to protect groundwater and soil.
