Foot-and-Mouth Disease Puts Cyprus on High Alert – Does it Affect Humans?

Foot-and-mouth disease, a serious and highly contagious animal disease, has raised concerns in Cyprus following its outbreak in the occupied territories. The disease affects animals with cloven hooves, such as cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs, causing high fever and blisters in the mouth and hooves. Transmission is easily achieved through direct contact, air, contaminated objects, and humans. Although it does not pose an immediate threat to humans, the disease can severely impact livestock and the economy. Management relies on prevention, isolation of cases, and biosecurity measures. In the free areas, controls along the Green Line and monitoring of livestock farms have been strengthened, while the situation remains under control but requires constant vigilance.
