Foot-and-Mouth Disease: EU Experts Investigate Outbreak in Cyprus

A four-member veterinary team of experts from the European Union is in Cyprus following a request from the Veterinary Services to investigate the cases of foot-and-mouth disease detected in the occupied territories. The team has already met with representatives of the Veterinary Services and has traveled to the occupied areas to be informed by local veterinarians. So far, the disease affects three cattle farms, with a total of 850 animals and ten positive samples. Vaccination has been decided for the affected farms and the wider area. The Director of Veterinary Services dismissed as unfounded the claims of the so-called “Minister of Agriculture” of the occupied territories regarding the origin of the disease from the free areas, emphasizing that Cyprus is free from foot-and-mouth disease.
