Foot-and-Mouth Disease Crisis in Cyprus: A Struggle for Control

Cyprus is facing a severe crisis with foot-and-mouth disease, which has affected large livestock farms in Larnaca and Nicosia. Damages exceed 30 million euros in compensation alone, while tens of thousands of animals have died. The Christodoulides government has been criticized for its inability to manage the crisis effectively, as well as for the delay in implementing EU protocols for quarantine and culling. The early recognition of the problem and the implementation of strict measures were delayed due to the attempt to take into account the situation in the occupied part of the island. European Health Commissioner Oliver Vahleri emphasized the need for strict adherence to the rules, without exceptions. The management of the crisis has highlighted the ineffectiveness of the government and the need for a holistic approach across the island, taking into account the situation in the occupied territories, where the first case was recorded in December. The lack of immediate response and the government's indecisiveness have worsened the situation.
