Foot and Mouth Disease Case Detected in Lesvos

A case of foot and mouth disease has been detected in a cattle unit in the Pelopi area of Lesvos. The Deputy Regional Governor for Primary Sector, Anastasia Antonelli, immediately convened an emergency meeting and strict measures have been implemented to prohibit the movement of animals (cattle, sheep, and pigs) and their products off the island. The aim of the measures is to prevent the spread of the disease and protect livestock farming on the island. Foot and mouth disease is a highly contagious disease that affects goats, sheep, cattle, and pigs, causing significant economic damage. Extensive checks have begun on all livestock in Lesvos, estimated at around 150,000 animals. Veterinary teams are taking samples and conducting checks on livestock farms throughout the island to determine the extent of the infection and prevent further spread of the disease. Early diagnosis and the immediate implementation of control measures are crucial for tackling foot and mouth disease. Authorities are calling on farmers to cooperate and comply with the measures in place to limit the spread of the disease and protect the island's economy.
